Barbara Lynch is a celebrated American chef and restaurateur from South Boston, Massachusetts. Born in 1964, she is now about 60 years old. She gained fame for founding a group of restaurants, most notably No. 9 Park in Boston, known for its approachable fine dining and a unique mix of Italian and French-Mediterranean flavors.
Her cooking style reflects her deep love for Italian traditions combined with local New England ingredients and a modern touch. Throughout her career, she has received many honors, including the James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurateur and a place on Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” list in 2017. In recent news, she decided to close all her Boston restaurants by the end of 2024 due to changing economic and real estate conditions.

Early Life

Barbara Lynch grew up in a housing project in South Boston, Massachusetts, as the youngest of six children and raised by a single mother. At age 13 she got her first kitchen job working in the rectory of a local church, where she prepared meals for the priests.
She did not complete high school and never attended culinary school, choosing instead to learn cooking in real life kitchens. During her high school years, a home economics teacher and a job working at the club of Chef Mario Bonello helped spark her interest in a career in food.

Career

Barbara Lynch began her professional journey working under some of Boston’s top chefs, including Todd English at Michela’s and Olives. After that, she traveled to Italy where she studied the traditions of Italian cuisine before returning to Boston and becoming executive chef at the small trattoria Galleria Italiana; there she won recognition when she was named one of Food & Wine’s “Ten Best New Chefs in America”.
In 1998, she opened her first restaurant, No. 9 Park in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, which quickly earned strong reviews and national attention. Over the next years she expanded her business by launching additional restaurants such as B&G Oysters and The Butcher Shop in 2003; Stir in 2007; and in 2008, other concepts including Drink (a cocktail bar) and Sportello (an Italian style counter service place). In spring 2010 she and her team opened Menton, a fine dining restaurant in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood, which went on to receive high honours including a four star review from The Boston Globe and other elite awards.
Throughout her career, Lynch has been recognised with major awards for example she was named “Best Chef Northeast” by the James Beard Foundation in 2003, inducted into the Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America, and in 2014 won the Foundation’s Award for Outstanding Restaurateur (making her the second woman ever to receive that honour).
Her restaurant group, the Barbara Lynch Collective, employed hundreds of people and generated millions in annual revenue at its peak.
Later on, she announced that all of her restaurants in Boston would close by the end of 2024, citing economic and real estate pressures.
