Kevin Magnussen has left a strong mark in Formula 1, but his role for 2025 is shifting as he will not be on the F1 grid as a full-time driver, instead stepping into a different role. He has never won a Grand Prix, but he achieved a second-place finish on his debut at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix. He lost his regular race seat at Haas F1 Team at the end of the 2024 season when the team changed its driver lineup.

Early Life

Kevin Jan Magnussen was born on 5 October 1992 in Roskilde, Denmark. He is the son of former Formula 1 driver Jan Magnussen, which meant that racing was a major part of his upbringing. He began karting at a young age and won the Danish Formula Ford Championship in 2008 after showing strong skill in junior racing categories.

Junior Racing Career

Kevin began his junior racing career in karting and then moved into single-seater cars. In 2008 he won the Danish Formula Ford Championship with 11 wins out of 15 races. In 2009 he raced in Formula Renault 2.0 for the Northern European Cup and finished as runner-up, and also raced in the Eurocup where he ended seventh overall. In 2010 he entered German Formula Three and secured several race wins; then in 2013 he won the Formula Renault 3.5 Series title after five wins and eight podiums, which helped him move up toward Formula 1.

Formula One Career

Kevin Magnussen entered Formula One in 2014 with the McLaren team and immediately made an impact by finishing 2nd in his debut race at the Australian Grand Prix. He then moved to Renault in 2016 and later to Haas F1 Team from 2017 onward, where he stayed for several seasons.
During his time in F1, he started over 185 Grand Prix races and scored more than 200 championship points. He achieved one pole position and one podium finish, both highlights in his career. In 2024 he announced he would leave Haas at the end of the season, bringing his current full time F1 grid drive to a close.

Sports Car Racing Career

Magnussen moved into sports car racing after many years in Formula 1. In 2021 he joined the Chip Ganassi Racing team in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and won his first race at Detroit’s Belle Isle circuit. He also raced in the 2021 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 class alongside his father, and in 2022 he started fresh as an official driver for BMW M Motorsport’s LMDh programme, gearing up for major endurance races.
Magnussen’s shift into sports cars shows his desire to compete in high-level endurance events and not just sprint races. He plans to race full seasons in both the IMSA series and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), including events like the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Indy Car Career

Kevin Magnussen made a single start in the IndyCar Series at the 2021 Road America event while driving for Arrow McLaren SP. He qualified in 21st place but retired from the race because of a technical issue. Magnussen has said that IndyCar was “the one that got away” as he pursued other motorsport paths instead of committing to a full IndyCar season.

Kevin Magnussen Net Worth

As of 2025, Kevin Magnussen’s net worth is estimated to be around US $30 million. He earned this amount mainly from his Formula 1 racing contracts with teams such as McLaren, Renault, and Haas. Along with his F1 salary, Magnussen also made money from sponsorship deals, brand partnerships, and prize earnings from motorsport events. His time in endurance racing and short stints in IndyCar and IMSA also added to his total wealth.
