The architecture of ancient cities undoubtedly inspires admiration for its forms and materials. Architects of the past set themselves the task of creating reliable fortifications or adapting the city to the landscape to ensure access to water and other resources. The specific needs of different groups of people were not a priority in ancient times, and so modern architects are updating the city’s appearance with this in mind.
Mariami Mamasakhlisi, an experienced architect from historic Tbilisi, has firsthand insight into how complex and responsible the renewal of historic urban environments can be. She was a member of the Strategic Development Plan Preparation Group of the Tbilisi Municipality Architecture Service, led a municipal urban project, and completed several original projects in the city center. Her priority is to create fully safe architectural solutions that harmoniously combine security, comfort, and practical value for people.
Mariami has reflected her accumulated experience in her academic research and is now preparing to apply it through a branch of her own architectural firm in the United States, building on original projects she has carried out in central Tbilisi and beyond Georgia.

Aesthetic Principles: Visual Harmony Shaped By Academic Training And Professional Practice

Mariami studied the subtle art of architecture at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. For over 100 years, the faculty of architecture has been training students in the fields of environmental design and urban architecture. During her studies, Mariami developed an understanding of how urban environments should be structured and zoned, and why attention to detail is critical at every stage of planning and construction. Since then, she has also been upgrading her skills each year and learning about new developments from leading organizations in the field.
For Mariami Mamasakhlisi, architecture is about caring for the people who live in the city, regardless of their social status. When starting a new project, she first studies legal regulations and technical possibilities, analyzes the site, and develops a design that is as aesthetic, functional, and comfortable as possible — only then does she refine the exterior. She seeks a balance between the city’s historic grandeur and modern structures that are safe and accessible to everyone. At the same time, she considers the long-term value of each project, ensuring that new developments benefit developers, small businesses, and the city’s budget.
This multifaceted approach to architecture also extends to adapting the city for people with special needs. Unfortunately, many large and historic cities remain poorly accessible to people with disabilities, which limits their participation in cultural and social life, and Tbilisi is among them. That is why Mariami has worked on inclusive architectural projects to make the urban environment genuinely accessible.

Accessibility As A Core Architectural Value: Structuring Inclusive Urban Experiences

At one point, Tbilisi was not adapted for people with disabilities. The city authorities began addressing this issue, and Mariami Mamasakhlisi was among the first architects to take on the challenge. In collaboration with the Inclusive Tourism Center "Parsa,"and at the initiative of Tbilisi City Hall, she developed a pilot urban project to adapt city streets for people with disabilities. A long, busy section of the city was redesigned to meet the needs of individuals with limited mobility while preserving the character and beauty of its historic streets. As a result, people gained the opportunity to enjoy walks or go about their daily activities with greater comfort and a sense of safety, and while much work still remains to make the entire city fully accessible, this project laid an important foundation for that ongoing effort.
Mariami has systematized her experience in a series of academic studies. In her works “Barrier-free environment in urban architecture: analysis of modern solutions,” “Accessibility and aesthetics: the search for balance in inclusive architecture,” and “Technology in inclusive architecture: applying new technologies to create accessible environments,” she demonstrates that inclusive design promotes equality in urban life and does not necessarily require excessive public spending.
In parallel with this research, Mariami was involved in projects within the Tbilisi Municipality Architecture Service. In this role, she also worked on documentation for project review and permit approval processes and monitored the compliance of design solutions with established urban planning requirements. The plan set out directions for the municipality’s architectural policy, including measures to combat chaotic and uncoordinated development, preserve the city’s urban fabric, and ensure that Tbilisi evolves as a comfortable, beautiful, and functional city for all. Her participation in this work allowed Mariami to apply her expertise within the broader context of systemic urban development, where decisions required balancing historical context, residents’ interests, business needs, safety requirements, and the area’s future development.
Mariami Mamasakhlisi's professional experience, which includes senior architectural roles in several organizations and managing her own practice, makes clear that design is only the visible outcome of an architect's far more complex, multilayered work. Behind the final appearance of a building or urban space lies legislative analysis, collaboration with municipal structures, compliance with urban-planning regulations, coordination among specialists, assessment of technical possibilities, and consideration of a city's long-term needs.

Human-Centered Design: Innovation Through Research, Technology, And User Insight

The context of a particular city is certainly important, but Mariami also focuses on international standards certified by the International Code Council to transform a historic city into an environment where everyone feels equally comfortable.
Mariami is preparing to open a branch of her own architectural firm in the United States, where she plans to bring a multidisciplinary approach shaped by her broader design background — spanning interior design, landscape urbanism, and spatial planning — alongside her expertise in inclusive design, municipal processes, and urban-planning regulation. This combination can provide a strong foundation for creative, well-rounded projects that meet U.S. standards for accessibility, safety, and the quality of the urban environment.

The Transformative Impact Of Mariami Mamasakhlisi’s Integrated Architectural Vision

Many years of experience in various architectural projects have shaped Mariami’s professional principles. The strategy lies in balancing the three pillars of a modern urban environment: historical aesthetics, practicality, and inclusiveness, without sacrificing any one parameter for the sake of the other. The architect believes that solutions aimed at improving mobility and public comfort can be integrated into the urban environment without compromising the buildings’ practicality for the city and its natural historical character.
Mariami's professional achievements have helped prove to the architectural community and city authorities that addressing aesthetics and inclusiveness improves cities. She is confident that many more projects lie ahead that will transform the lives of people with disabilities, but these projects will set new international standards, where the city is an environment for human habitation, not survival.
