What could people expect from a signature space created for PR firm? Interior designer Christopher Grubb, IIDA, NKBA, and his team at Arch-Interiors Design Group, Beverly Hills, California, were charged with creating a unique signature space for global PR giant Weber Shandwick’s Los Angeles headquarters.

There were three main requirements for the project:

  • ensure the design and overall look manifests the way employees view the company from the inside
  • reflect the firm’s commitment to eco-consciousness
  • make maximum use of the small amount of natural light that is available inside the space.

Reading these conditions will give one an idea of what a signature space created for PR firm will look like.

Furniture And Design Project An Image

At the beginning stage of the design phase, Weber Shandwick management asked the employees to share their design and furnishing ideas. For a signature space created for PR firm, their ideas will play an important factor.

They wanted to be sure that the overall look and concept reflected the way the company was viewed internally.

Employees posted inspirational images of the furniture, finishes, and various examples of interior spaces on a shared online board.

According to Grubb, it was tricky to design for a client whose employees had direct input into the design concept.

However, one of his trademark skills is making everyone involved in a particular project feel like their needs and desires are acknowledged.

He used his innate ability to interpret why individuals like a particular element to select furnishings and materials that spoke to every request.

Thus, in a signature space created for PR firm, those materials and furniture reflect what the employees want to see in their offices.

Environmental Concerns When Designing

Even a signature space created for PR firm needs to incorporate an eco-friendly design.

To meet the company’s rigid ecological standards, Grubb used sustainable products including reclaimed wood on the curved ceilings, decorative LED fixtures, quartz-aggregate countertops, and other products and materials that met LEED certification requirements. (Certification is pending.)

The office accesses only one exterior building wall, so, therefore, has only one row of windows to allow in natural light.

To make efficient use of natural light, Grubb maximized its distribution throughout the space. The result is a signature space created for PR firm that is energy-efficient.

He positioned the communal rooms, such as the lunchroom, along this wall so that all employees could enjoy the natural sunlight.

He maximized light distribution by using glass partitions wherever possible and positioned an island of workstations in the middle of the space.

Final Thoughts

The design combines a mixture of multi-functional environments, including individual offices, benching workstations, a media room, a war room, a kitchenette, and a meeting room - all with access to the natural light source.

In addition, the design includes a calling/mother’s room for full privacy. This can be an added feature of a signature space created for PR firm.

The loft-like space mixes modern design with organic materials and playful elements, which feel at once whimsical and purposeful.

Grubb used a gray color palette, which offers a sophisticated nod to the company’s beginnings in 1974.

He added hexagonal carpet for dynamic texture, plus contemporary furniture and modern colors such as lime green and orange to reflect the company’s relevancy in today’s business, social, and economic climate to their diverse array of clients.

As current or future clients first walk into the reception area, the rolling, reclaimed-wood ceiling, playful stacks of seating, and large, customizable display screens, reflect the creativity found behind the office doors.

A signature space created for PR firm should be welcoming and visually pleasing.
